The site is operational 24/7 and employs over 400 people.

This is the role

As an environmental manager you ensure that the plant is operating in accordance with environmental guidelines and targets. You lead a team of 2 environmental technicians, and you assume operational responsibility for an industrial wastewater unit. You'll also create, implement and monitor environmental strategies to promote sustainable development. You will carry out environmental audits and assessments, identifying and resolving environmental problems and ensuring necessary changes are implemented.

Typical duties and responsibilities are:

  • Operational excellence and continuous improvement
    • Coach and develop 2 environmental technicians who work in the area of waste management and wastewater treatment.
    • be responsible for the environmental facilities and equipment, such as wastewater treatment plant, analytical lab equipment, etc.
    • develop and implement environmental management systems (ISO 14001) to continuously reduce the impact on the environment
    • coordinate all aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation, and renewable energy.
    • carry out impact assessments to identify, assess and reduce environmental risks and financial costs
    • audit, analyze and report environmental performance to internal and external clients and regulatory bodies
    • negotiate environmental service agreements and manage associated costs and revenues 
  • Compliance
    • Keep the permit up to date and stay in compliance with regulations.
    • ensure that the plant is operating in accordance with environmental guidelines and targets.
    • ensure compliance with environmental legislation and keep up to date with Belgian, European Union and international regulation and legislation
    • coordinate public hearings and consultations on environmental matters to maintain and expand our license to operate
    • Train staff at all levels on environmental issues and responsibilities.
  • Stakeholder management
    • Maintain high level of communication with EMEA HSES Manager, Corporate HSES and other support functions as needed.
    • Translate and deploy the EMEA Region vision and guidelines to the local Belgian situation.
    • Participate as needed on corporate assessments.
    • Act as primary contact person on environment for authorities.
    • Act as an advocate for environmental issues and as the primary liaison between the Region & Ghent.

 

This is what you bring

Suitable candidates should have or be willing to obtain following qualifications and competencies:

  • Master’s degree in engineering, preferably related to chemistry
  • 5+ years of experience in the industry
  • Certified ‘Milieucoördinator niveau A’
  • Strong influencing and leadership skills.
  • Strong commitment and drive.
  • Well organized and having the ability to manage data and KPI’s.
  • Strategic thinker and proactive doer.
  • Full professional proficiency in Dutch and English
